Super Foods You Need to Know About

Posted by amm on Saturday, 30 January, 2010

You have probably heard the term super food before.  This term is used to describe foods that contain nutrients and vitamins that are uncommon or in a high concentration compared to similar foods.  Below are some of the top super foods and why they are referred to as super foods.  Some of them you have probably heard of, some of them probably not.

The number one super food that most people have already heard of is the acai berry.  This fruit offers a super high concentration of antioxidants.  It also has some protein and healthy doses of dietary fiber and omega fatty acids.  It is a very nutritious food and one of the most popular health supplements in the world.

Pistachio nuts are the next super food I want to introduce to you.  These little nuts are called the skinny nut and are really good for you.  They are high in antioxidants, protein, and fiber.  The pistachio nut is called the skinny nut because it is low in calories – a serving of about 50 nuts has only 160 calories.  They are a great snack by themselves or they can be added to salads, muffins, cereal, and lots of other snacks and meals.

There are two more super foods I want to mention.  One is a fruit often compared to the acai berry and the other is a common nut you probably have heard of before.

The pomegranate is a super food sometimes compared to the acai berry. It is full of antioxidants and has a very exotic flavor.  This fruit has gotten a lot of attention because of its antioxidant content.

The last super food is walnuts.  There is a good chance you know about walnuts and have even used them cooking, but you may not know about the health benefits.  The walnut is a great source of vitamins, antioxidants, dietary fiber and protein.  They also have a higher concentration of omega 3 fatty acids compared to other nuts.

Now you may be wondering where you can buy these super foods.  Acai berries are probably best taken in supplement form because you will have a very hard time finding them fresh.  Pomegranates are now becoming fairly common and available in many grocery stores.  Walnuts are a common thing to find in almost every grocery store.  Pistachio nuts are not as common as walnuts, but ther are available in most stores now.

Whether you are looking for a healthy snack or an antioxidant boost, these fruits and nuts are a great addition to your diet.  If you are looking for more information on health supplements, head over to SassafrasStation.com and sign up for their newsletter and a series of free reports including reports on acai berries and pistachios.

Fad Weight Loss Diets

Posted by amm on Saturday, 30 January, 2010

Overview:

When someone is considered “obese” it is referring to an excessive amount of body fat. If you have endlessly had difficulty with controlling your weight, there is a good likelihood that you are aquainted with the frustrations of dieting. Ninety-five percent of the millions of Americans that succeed at losing weight on a diet, gain all of it back within five years. Worse, a third will gain back even more weight than they lost in the first place, in danger of “yo-yoing” from one fad diet to another. The usual approach to weight problems, which is depending on popular weight loss diets or weight loss drugs, might leave you with just as much weightand the additional problem of bad health.

Today, an estimated sixty-five percent of all American adults are obese or overweight. We exist in a society that values staying thin, though the entire nation is growing larger, nevertheless this is not only about looks. Obesity is identified to be a precursor to countless debilitating health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and gallbladder disease. Obesity contributes to as many as 375,000 deaths each year. In addition, the public health expenses for obesity are unbelievable. According to researchers at Harvard University, obesity is a factor in 19% of all cases of heart disease with yearly health costs estimated at 30 billion dollars; it’s also a factor in 57% of diabetes cases, with health costs of $9 billion per year.

Set Realistic Goals:

There is a great likelihood that you have fallen for some of the fad weight loss schemes that guarantee fast and effortless weight loss. A lot of of these popular diets are not good for your health and they in time end up in letdown when the weight is regained. Fad or speedy weight loss diet programs commonly overstress one kind of food. They contravene the fundamental standard of great nutrition – to remain healthy one must eat a balanced diet, which consists of a mixture of foods. Harmless, healthy, and lasting weight reduction is what is in fact lost among the thousands of fad diet programs..

Some of the weight loss diet schemes reign supreme temporarily, only to fade out. Some drop out of the limelight because they are unhealthful and they do not succeed and others because the public loses curiosity. Examples of such popular diets include the South Beach Diet, Atkins diet, the Grapefruit diet, Cabbage Soup diet, the Rotation diet, Beverly Hills diet, Breatharian, Ornish Plan – the listing goes on and on. These trend diets support a certain system (such as avoiding a particular food, or eating only particular combinations of foods) in conjunction with the fundamental knowledge that the body makes up the difference in energy by breaking down and utilizing some part of itself, in essence converting matter into energy. This self-cannibalism, or catabolism as it is referred, naturally starts with the breakdown of stored body fat.

Frequent Occurances Of Heartburn Can Be Uncomfortable

Posted by amm on Thursday, 28 January, 2010

Sometimes I get heartburn but I think myself lucky because for me it is something that happens only occasionally. What we call heartburn is nothing to do with the heart but it can be uncomfortable and it happens rarely for most of us but some people find they suffer frequent occurrences.

When I get a bout of heartburn it usually disappears
almost without being noticed as it is just no longer there. But for some people the symptoms of heartburn are a frequent problem it is part of their normal lives.

The cause of heartburn is most commonly the failure of the small sphincter valve which fails to close in the correct way when it should. The purpose of this sphincter valve is to close up after eating and avoid the problems of acidic gases from the stomach which could rise and making your throat feel like it is burning but if it fails to operate correctly and allows the gasses to rise and cause discomfort and damage to your throat lining. Knowing this makes it easy to understand the burning feelings we experience when suffering from heartburn and acid reflux symptoms occurring.

Should the valve remain open over a considerable period of time then the lining protecting the tissues of the throat could become damaged but temporary heartburn in most cases will not result in any long lasting complications. You should be sure that the condition is correctly diagnosed and get advice by arranging to visit your doctor to be reassured that your health is ok and there is no need for treatment.

We do have some practical options that may help reduce some of the symptoms of heartburn attacks and to try to lessen the frequency of such occurrences. Heartburn and acid reflux do seem to occur for me if I am feeling tired so it seems logical if you can improve your sleeping habits it may help your resistance to such attacks.

We do hear of certain foods which can increase incidences where heartburn occurs and reducing coffee consumption can help as may reducing how much spicy food you eat. Smoking may also be a factor and I expect this is due to the smoke having an effect on the throat lining and making matters worse.

So often we hear about health problems that can be reduced through sensibly with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit whilst maintaining a level of good fitness and ensuring you sleep properly can all help. Living in a healthy way and eating properly may cut down the effect and also curb the frequencies of bouts of heart burn and also reduce the severity of the symptoms of acid reflux you suffer.

How To Select A Home Blood Pressure Monitor

Posted by amm on Thursday, 28 January, 2010

There are several varieties and types of home blood pressure monitors (HBPM). Purchasing a blood pressure monitor is a good way to keep track of your blood pressure; then again, selecting one can be puzzling. The selection is individual and usually based on::Accuracy, Ease of use, Price, Type of cuff, Memory and printing options.  It is essential to pick out one you are happy with. This article will offer you a few pointers and information to select the best BP monitor for you.

Home blood pressure monitors are essentially of 3 types, Mercury column, aneroid and Digital Blood pressure machines.

Mercury HBPMs:
These are seen in Doctor’s Offices. They are the most precise, but most tricky to use. This monitor uses a stethoscope to detect the sounds in the arteries.

Aneroid HPBMs-
These monitors are the second most reliable.  Aneroid monitors range in cost from about $20 to $30. They also require using a stethoscope – which is integrated in this particular model. They are lightweight, portable, and affordable. Experts from the American Society of Hypertension suggest this variety and reveal that these are the most inexpensive monitors and not a lot can go wrong with them. Aneroid models can be complicated to use, and may need instruction by a doctor or health employee. Additionally, using these requires good hearing and eyesight and might not be the best selection for elderly or disabled people For these reasons, aneroid HBPMs are usually less well-liked than digital monitors.

Digital HBPMs:
These machines are less accurate, but they are the easiest to operate. They are a great alternative for people who are hard of hearing or have poor eyesight. If you operate it properly, it is the best selection for anyone.

Also it is necessary to think about the type of cuff while investing in HBPMs. Cuffs are of three types. Arm, wrist and finger cuffs. Arm cuffs are the most exact. Finger and wrist cuffs are only suggested for individuals who cannot wear them on the arm. An incorrectly fitted arm cuff will give out a false reading. This is the most frequent cause for wrong blood pressure readings. To find out your cuff size, measure around the middle of your upper arm. If it is
Less than 31 cm (12.2 in), purchase a regular-size cuff.
Between 31 and 40 cm (15.7 in), buy a large-size cuff.

Cuffs have to be inflated to gauge blood pressure- they include those that must be inflated manually, semi-automatic devices, or auto inflate devices.

Next are some pointers for when you purchase your blood pressure machine.

Display Size – Is a standard or an oversized LCD read-out needed? Try to take one with a standard size.
Power Supply – Battery powered or AC adapter. If you travel, the battery powered unit is your top choice.
Recall Features – A number of models recall the very last reading or multiple readings. There are also models that have a PC link. Better to decide on one that has a recollection of atleast one month BP monitoring.
Printing options- Several monitors also include printing options to keep your records safe.
Cuff Sizes – Large and small arm cuffs are available for some units. The size of the cuff on a blood pressure monitor may be the most influential feature in receiving a correct reading. So each time use a cuff which is not too small and not too large.
Cost – Cost may possibly be the most important factor. Keep in mind to do as much research as possible. The more high-priced models might not consistently be superior to the less costly monitors
Accuracy – Readings on some wrist and finger units may not be as accurate as an arm unit depending on the person.
Simplicity – Depends on personal choice. People with particular disabilities may find one monitor easier to use than another.
Length of Warranty – Warranties vary from one to three years. Check your unit regularly to make sure everything runs efficiently and accurately.

While monitoring your blood pressure is important, reducing it is more important. If you are overweight, learning how to get rid of body fat and losing excess weight can be a literal life saver.

Healthy Diet Plan Can Be Tailored To Be More Attractive And Effective

Posted by amm on Thursday, 28 January, 2010

The true meaning of the phrase ‘healthy diet plan‘ needs to be understood before trying to create one or even follow one that already exists. Most of us when asked what a phrase such as this means will immediately imagine having to eat their salads without any dressings and also eating whole grain toasts without applying any butter on the surface. This means that we tend to imagine all sorts of morbid things which however need not always be the case. It is in fact possible to eat healthily but without having to follow a boring diet plan.

The right kind of healthy diet plan can actually be made to be quite interesting and it can go beyond eating dishes that contain no fat and it also means eating foods other than tasteless and bland dishes with few calories in them. You can certainly continue to eat tasty items of foods and you can also change the type of foods you eat so that you are not forced into eating the same types of foods day in and day out.

You only need to start off the plan by looking at a food pyramid and then find out which foods from this pyramid can help you achieve a healthier body. To get more options you should search over the net to find out from the many different sites what foods are good for you and which recipes you should make use of to create the right kind of healthy but enjoyable foods.

Even after you have created a diet plan that consists of healthy foods it is necessary that you act with resolve and determination in sticking to the diet plan and not giving up when things become slightly more difficult. In addition, you have to learn to avoid certain kinds of messages that are promoted by various kinds of media in which the message is skewed in order to serve certain purposes.

Therefore, you must not allow yourself to be influenced by those extra thin models sporting very sparse amount of fat on their bodies. Instead you need to realize that eating the right foods is better than starving the body.

The good news is that following a healthy food diet does not in any way mean that you have to permanently give up eating pizzas or other foods that you love to eat. All that is required is that instead of eating an entire pizza that you limit your consumption to a single part of the pizza.

And, if you love chocolate bars then you only need to remember to eat the bar over several days and not in a single go.

You must avoid extreme behaviors because it is better to focus on eating the right foods in the right quantities and you need to also be sensitive to the needs of your body. This is really the key to eating healthy with a healthy diet plan. You don’t need to mistreat your body in order to stay healthy.
